Jump Start Your Seder

Over 65 people gathered to “Jump Start their Seders” this week with a shiur led by Rabbi Weinberg. A few of the highlights:

Rav Soloveitchik understands אכילת מצה as actually being a Kiyum of the mitzvah of סיפור יציאת מצרים. The way the Rav understood the eating of Matzah and the Korban Pesach is as a form of Symbolic speech. Meaning the eating of these things while also being a Mitzvah in their own right they are themselves a form of Haggadah.

The Rambam writes that בלע מצה יצא בלע מרוֹר לא יצא, if one swallows the Matzah he fulfills his obligation of eating Matzah and סיפור יציאת מצרים however if one swallows the Maror they do not fulfill the Mitzvah. Perhaps the reason why is as follows:

The Haggadah aspect of Matzah is the story of the Matzah, that it was made B’Chipazon, in great haste, it is bread of affliction and it bears the love that G-d praises us for, however, it culminates with the eating, it is the last aspect of the Mitzvah. So, if one swallows it without tasting, it doesn't take away from the story that has been told through the process of making it up until that point. Maror on the other hand is only about the bitterness; therefore if one swallows Maror without tasting it there is no Kiyum of סיפור יציאת מצרים
