Sixth Grade Trip to Greenkill by Lily Lerner

On November 24th and 25th the sixth graders went on their overnight trip to Greenkill, an outdoor environmental center in upstate New York.  After a two-hour bus ride, we arrived at the camp and were given our room assignments.  After getting settled in our rooms, we went to the dining hall for lunch.  Following lunch, the grade was divided up into smaller groups.  Each group was assigned a naturalist and a teacher who led us in all our exciting activities.  Over the next day-and-a-half, we were introduced to a variety of different outdoor adventures.

The activities were varied, but all were designed to teach us how to work cooperatively in our groups and to keep trying, even if it got tough and we felt like giving up.  As a group, we faced many different challenges.  Our first team-building test was a game involving a jump rope, which kept some of us sweating and all of us laughing.  We also learned about an A-frame, and how to lift one of our favorite teachers off the ground without dropping her.  Another activity was a nature hike where we collected artifacts and had a discussion about why we chose those things and what made them special.  One of the best activities was the Birds of Prey show at night. We got to see up close incredible, and sometimes scary, birds that we would normally only see from a great distance. Following this, we ventured out on a night hike which was thrilling and informative. Our eyes adjusted, and, despite the raindrops, we played games in the forest just with the light from the stars.

At the end of a very full day, we went to the dining hall for a kumsitz, in which Rabbi Weinberg told us many great stories, taught us new songs, and sang some old favorites with us - all while accompanying us on his guitar.  Who knew that in addition to all of his school-related talents, he's a musician as well?  By the time the kumsitz was over, most of us were ready to get into many layers of warm clothing and prepare for a long night of laughing and talking.  One of the funniest moments in the girls’ bunk was playing "Would you rather.?" with Mrs. Schwartz, Ms. Lazar, Ms. Gutin, Mrs. Levy, Nurse Toby and Mrs. Wexler - all while we were in pajamas!

Even though the trip to Greenkill was short, it was packed with fun, lots of learning, and good snacks. It is a trip that we won't ever forget!
