Internet Safety

This past week the Middle School put great focus on internet safety.  Workshops were held for students in grades 6-8 and parents in grades 4-8 so that the dangers that are out there could be processed and worked on.  Mr. Philip Rosenthal, who is a computer forensic investigator, spoke with our students about mature subject matter in a serious and straightforward way.  He touched upon several issues:

1. Understanding the hurdles that today’s youth must contend with.
2. The legal ramifications of burning music, downloading movies, syncing I-tunes, and allowing friends to burn cd’s.
3. The dangers of Facebook and myspace.
4. The dangers of texting and cell phone use amongst adolescents.
5. Predators that may lurk on line.
6. The dangers of sharing information on line with people that one doesn’t know.

At our parent evening we had 50 parents listen to Mr. Rosenthal tell it “like it is”. It was an exceedingly important evening of information and questions. This program is essential for our students and parents, and we will continue to be aggressive in preventive programming to help deal with these issues from the educational perspective.
