WHAT IS CHANUKAH…? (Shabbat 21b)מאי חנוכה?...(שבת כא:)

What was the חנוכה (Chanukah) experience for our children here at Moriah? After a most busy week of hectic activity, can we truly ever know which particular piece of our celebration in school had the power to touch the נשמות (souls) of our students and convey to them the profound message of נס חנוכה (the Chanukah miracle)? Every child is unique and responded in his or her own individual way to the variety of activities which made up our Chanukah.

What did חנוכה at Moriah mean to your child? Was it the acts of חסד (chesed) displayed by our kindergarteners when they sang for the senor citizens or our fifth graders when they celebrated with seniors from the Teaneck Jewish Center? May be it was the recitation of Hallel? For other students the special Chanukah foods and Simon Says might be what stood out about the week. And for our youngest students, making oil out of olives might have stood out the most.

Perhaps it was the combination of all the events which infused ןn our students the special meaning of Chanukah.
