Elections in Lower School

Election ’08 has been one of the most exciting Presidential races in the history of our country. Our first through fifth graders have spent an impressive amount of time over the past few weeks engaged in activities to help them gain a better perspective on the many aspects of both the Republican and Democratic political campaigns, and what the process of voting entails.

The children have been investigating such topics as: the responsibilities of the President and the qualifications of office; the organization of the three branches of government and the importance of the electoral college; an introduction to political parties and how the candidates are chosen and of course, the critical issues of the campaign. The children have been investigating such topics as: the responsibilities of the President and the qualifications of office; the organization of the three branches of government and the importance of the electoral college; an introduction to political parties and how the candidates are chosen and of course, the critical issues of the campaign.

To culminate our school’s involvement with the election, Moriah’s Lower School students participated in our own mock election, as well as the Scholastic News Mock Election and video conference. Interestingly, John McCain won at Moriah with 75% of the votes, while Barack Obama won the Scholastic News Election with 57% of the votes.
