Fantastic First Grade News

First graders are beginning their fun unit on Thanksgiving! We will read many books about how the Pilgrims came to America. We are learning that anyone new to a place can be called a Pilgrim.  Some of our Thanksgiving books are funny as well as informative reinforcing the terms "fiction and non-fiction".

We look forward to making stand up Pilgrim and Indian puppets and "thankful turkeys" and "thankful headbands". Runaway Turkey! will be the title of our creative writing assignments. For our Thanksgiving feast which will be on Tuesday, first graders will make their own butter by shaking jars of heavy cream, and boil up fresh cranberries for our delicious cranberry sauce. All these activities tie in with our current scientific study of liquids and solids. Math comes into play as we learn how to measure ingredients while doing our cooking activities. Corn muffins, corn chips and crackers will make our feast complete. Yum! Have a happy one!
