The Moriah Brit Midot: The Next Generation

Over the past three years we have made diligent efforts to add more components to our Brit Midot – Covenant of Ethics with the goal of transforming a written document into a living ethical guideline for every constituency of the Moriah community.  This past year we greatly expanded the scope of activities for inculcating these midot into the daily lives of our students and staff, most notably through our surveying the parents and faculty as to their perceptions of the moral climate of the school and through our M.A.K. (Moriah Acts of Kindness) certificate program.  In grades 1-5, teachers fill out M.A.K. certificates for any and every child for behavior that demonstrates one of the three focus midot: k’vod ha’briot (respect for each other), chesed (loving kindness) and tzedek (justice –doing what is right).  Every Friday, each class has a drawing and the child whose name is picked receives a prize, while ALL the children who had certificates put into the midot box for that week have their names listed in the classroom.  Our goal is to get the students to eventually internalize the importance and love of acting according to these midot so that they will intrinsically want to be ba’alei midot and not because they can get a prize.  Reports from a number of last year’s teachers in grades 3-5 indicate that this program can be a motivator which makes a difference in the behavior of our children..

This coming year, we will build on the inroads made last year and add several more components to the Brit Midot program, such as moral decision-making activities in the classroom, source material on these midot for our students to study in their classes and periodic source material and parenting ideas for reinforcing ethical behavior, to be sent to all of our parents

Please take the time to review the Brit Midot (click here) with your child/ren. Shabbat and the Chagim provide a wonderful time and opportunity for your entire family to focus on these central values in our lives.
